About us

Introduction

The Central Department of Geography (CDG) located in the University Campus; Kirtipur is one of the leading Departments of Tribhuvan University. It was formally established in 1959. Since then, it has been actively serving the country in higher education and research. The Department runs Masters Programme in Geography, which is open to all disciplines to apply for admission. The PhD Programme in Geography is handled by the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, TU.. However, all the Ph.D. researcher regularly come to the department, use departmental library, the departmetnal lab and consult their supervisors who are from the faculty members of this department. It is a pioneer department running academic courses on Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in the country. The newly established soil and water analysis lab has enhanced the interaction of CDG with other central departments under the Institute of Sciences and Technology. The Department has well qualified and experienced faculties.

Mission

The mission of the Central Department of Geography is to address national needs through the enhancement of teaching- learning, research, and services to the country and society. The department endeavors to pursue the highest level of excellence through a cutting-edge learning environment, applied research and scholarly activities by means of all its program delivery modes.

Vision

The Central Department of Geography envisions to be a leading teaching and research center in South Asia Region by producing the highest level of academic excellence. It will conduct and provide research opportunities through joint research and international collaborations. The department also envisions as a leading GIS/RS hub of Tribhuvan University facilitating and providing services to national and international stakeholders and supporting post graduate and doctoral students.

Goals

In order to realize the vision, the department has established four strategic goals and is entrusted with important responsibilities to:

  1. Deliver high quality research -intensive academic programs
  2. Continuous improvement in quality and outreach to geography students and professionals.
  3. Excel efficiency of teaching staffs, students and administration/management through improvement and addition of capacity development, physical infrastructure, facilities and academic environment.
  4. Innovative research/ service solutions through GIS/RS center as a Hub

Objectives

  1. To develop pipeline academic programs: Shorts courses, Diploma and Professional degree
  2. To implement institutional research themes into Master’s and PhD courses
  3. To offer field research based research courses
  4. To increase number of students from multidisciplinary field to demonstrate wider scope of Geography
  5. To collaborate with national and international academic institutions to capacitate faculties and students and extend research area.
  6. To provide creative and innovative approach to the learning process
